An app that’s encouraging women to go hormone- and chemical-free in 2017

As part of a New Year health drive, Natural Cycles (www.naturalcycles.com), the fertility tracking app that uses a smart algorithm to pinpoint fertility, is encouraging women who use hormonal contraception to go hormone- and chemical-free in 2017.

This is good news for the UK’s estimated 3.5m women, and 100m women worldwide, who use hormonal contraception, given the 2016 University of Copenhagen study which confirmed a link between hormonal contraceptives and depression*. The study was the largest of its kind, with one million Danish women between the ages of 15 and 34 tracked for a total of 13 years.

Natural Cycles is an effective, hormone- and chemical-free birth control alternative. In 2016, a study showed that the fertility tracking app was as effective as The Pill** – and it is currently being used by over 150,000 women. Natural Cycles helps women to accurately pinpoint fertilitywhich allows them to prevent (or plan) a pregnancy. The app works by recording your daily temperature. A smart algorithm then determines whether you are fertile on that day which lets you accurately know whether and when to have protected intercourse.

“As we start the New Year, we are all trying to be a little more mindful of our bodies”, says Dr Elina Berglund, CTO and co-founder of Natural Cycles, “and women in the UK and around the world are interested in exploring effective, non-hormonal contraception options like Natural Cycles.  Choice is important; there are plenty of contraception options available, including IUDs and condoms, and women should never give up on contraception – if they are unhappy with the pill, they should look for alternatives. Apps like Natural Cycles are allowing women everywhere to become more self-aware of their bodies and make decisions that are right for them.”

Natural Cycles was created by husband and wife team Dr Raoul Scherwitzl and Dr Elina Berglund, the physicist who discovered the Higgs Boson which lead to the Nobel Prize in 2013. Natural Cycles is used in over 161 countries.
